I have an 18x drive and use Fuji 16x media and had left the setting to "Maximum" in DVD Shrink and had some issues. Went back to 4x (that's the lowest choice I get in DVD Shrink) and things are happier.

Just curious what everyone else does.

I use Taiyo Yuden 16X media and I burned everything at 16X with no problems for some time. But, after some good advice, I now use 12X. It's only a minute or two slower, but has a generally higher reliability. So I set all my burners to 12X when using 16X media. Just in case.

Going to the lowest speed can also cause problems with newer burners. Burning a 16X at 2X, for example, can cause problems at times. Each burner has a optimum speed, as does the selected media. If you have 16X media, drop it down a few speeds and you may have better results. Most newer burners may have a problem at 1X, for example.

I wouldn't use 4X, but try 12X and you should be able to get good results.

I find Imb or DVDdecryptor will look at both my burner and the discs inserted and give the best burn range. I have found the lowest burn speed listed works well. Have not had a bad burn using this method.

8X for dvd video since they came out with 16X media, what's a minute or two, 90% of the time Verbatim, once in awhile fuji, no problems ever.

    2X for PS2's & 4X when i feel adventurous

I just set to max. It seems to burn at about 12x, no matter what DVD's I buy. All the way from 4x to 16x - they all burn at about 12x. Although there is the very rare one that will burn at less than 1x??? However, since I started using TY DVDs, there hasn't been a coaster in years.

I'm exactly in the same stage as vico1..
I've finally used up all my Verbatims, and now with the TY's, i've comfortably started burning at 8x speed...

    TY's + 8X burn speed = Happy me!!!
